While I understand why John McCain might want to emulate some aspects of Hillary Clinton's primary campaign -- she did, after all, come in a strong second place, having inspired almost 18 million votes and a hugely passionate base of support -- one does question the wisdom of some of the messaging team McCain is using against Obama that's right out of the Clinton playbook, messaging that did not work.
As we saw in McCain's "high gas prices are your fault!" ad yesterday, McCain has a go at mocking Obama's "hope" rhetoric, as Clinton had done, with the line at the end:
Don't hope for more energy, vote for it.
At least Hillary Clinton mocked Barack's hope mongering in contrast to her results-oriented persona -- in the clouds idealist vs. grounded realist. McCain is making no such case.
Now today we see John McCain trying another Clinton tactic -- mocking Barack Obama as a media darling (umm, pot meet kettle much?) Check out this web ad, which, while somewhat amusing, I think actually ends up reinforcing the positive image of Barack, rather than mocking it.
Not to mention that when Hillary Clinton mocked the media's love affair with Barack she actually had a case to make that she was getting the short end of the media stick. That's hardly the case for John McCain. As Greg Sargent says, "McCain is no stranger to media adulation."
Considering Steve Schmidt was so effective at shepherding Bush and Schwarzenegger to re-election during the past two cycles, I'm actually quite surprised at how hapless and flailing McCain 2.0 continues to be.
