We came way too close to a President Rudy Giuliani. I'm not saying he was ever really the most likely winner, but the fact that it was ever even plausible scares the hell out of me.

Anybody else really want to consider how amazingly lucky we are here?

That it was ever even possible that this schmuck might get the nomination chills me to my bones. Here's a list (and by no means a comprehensive one):

1) Two failed marriages (so far!).

Estranged children.
Shacked up with his mistress in the governor's mansion before his divorce was finalized.
His second wife didn't learn about their separation prior to Rudy's press conference.
Missed every single meeting of the Iraq Study Group!
Bernard Kerik. Need I say more?
9/11 cleanup mess. The firefighters have a laundry list of grievances.
9/11, 9/11, 9/11, 9/11!!!!! It's his whole raison d'etre.
Trainwreck of a Senate race.
Race-baiting in his mayoral races.
He tried to stay in office beyond the term limits!!! This would be scary under any circumstances, but after President Bush we cannot have a president who considers himself so indispensible that the law is an impediment to be ignored.
Neocon foreign policy advisors like Norman Podheretz. Rudy was their guy. <shudders>
Lobbies for some of the worst scum in the world, but won't tell us exactly who they are.

I could go on for hours, folks. The day this jerk dropped out I did something I rarely ever do - I thanked God. However much fun it would have been to beat him I really have to admit, well, we dodged a bullet here.

I just wanted to reflect for a moment. Just think about having him as our leader...

No matter how mad I am at John McCain, no matter how desperately I know we need to win, I must remember how grateful we should all be that this idiot isn't being considered. Our democracy would not well survive anyone with such fascist tendencies, especially after our flirtation with disaster (President Bush).

Everything tastes of ash and death when I think of this man. He so easily and so cheaply cashed in on our shared suffering.

Joe Biden was correct. Every time Rudy Giuliani opens his mouth he says three things: a noun, a verb, and 9/11.

I agree with cg. The list is a lot stronger without 1-4. Especially putting the personal stuff first makes it seem like petty character assassination, when in reality, the case against Rudy on policy issues alone is very very strong.

You left off a lot of his clear statements of authoritarian sentiment. Rudy would have been Cheney on steroids when it comes to shredding the Constitution.

Your attempt to change the subject to "the issues" is irrelevant.

Usually I would agree with you on this one, but this time I don't.

The GOP has made 'family values' THE cornerstone of their party's 'moral compass'. This man's failiings are his own doing, and because the party refused to call him out on these issues when they still sit in judgement of others for similar failings (or even lesser ones) provides an acceptable reason to list them here.

Hell's bells, even the GOP didn't have to crucify Eisenhower's record in order to make Reagan their 'saint'. We can have two great ones, you know?

That's the attitude we need this election. I don't distinguish between ANY of the GOP candidates. They all lead to the same road of a further weakening economy, continued mistrust of the US by the rest of the world, and a determination to use our military for their own personal political goals.

I'm 100% on board on defeating McCain. But Giuliani is absolutely worse.

Reap is right. I was actually pulling for McCain on the Republican side for two reasons.

1) Despite being a media darling, he is not a strong candidate in terms of personal energy and ability to generate excitement. He is kind of a Bob Dole without the sense of humor. Plus the fact he had to hug W so hard for 4 years to get the righties to sort of accept him has crippled his ability to position himself on issues.

2) His policies and ideology are stupid, crazy and wrong, and I would never vote for him in a million years, but with the possible exception of Paul, McCain is slightly less crazy and wrong than any of the other Republican candidates this year.

Shorter version: I wanted McCain because (1) he will probably lose, and (2) he might win.

Ultimately, I think Giuliani would have gone down in flames even worse than Romney or Huckabee would have. What a terrible man.

I think McCain is only R who has a chance... (2.00 / 2)

...this fall. The only other one who might have made a good showing is Huckabee. His policies suck ass but he is a likable guy and that goes a long way with some people.

After seeing Gulliana and Romney at the debates I stopped worrying about them. They are really bad candidates and they would never have been able to pretend to distance themselves from Bush like McCain has. It is a shame the Repubs put up the only guy that has a fair chance of winning.

I never really considered Rudy a legitimate threat to win the nomination. Huckabee was the one I was worried about. He would have definitely won the 'guy I'd like to have a beer with' crowd. The one I really wanted to see get the nom was Grampa Fred. This election would have been a slaughter.

There has been a lot of pissing and moaning on the right about the choice of McCain as the GOP candidate. Despite all of that griping, it is clear that the GOP nomination process worked the way it is supposed to work. They got the one candidate that has a chance to win this year.

Rudy was laughable and a man without a base anywhere. He was a media hyped goner just as Fred Thompson was. Both were figments of Chris Matthews imagination. We never had to worry about Rudy. Biden put the final nail in his electoral coffin.
